 secular rap
« Thread Started on Feb 7, 2005, 2:56am »

I went in and out of convo's about the issue of listening to "worldly rap".. it's affect on christians, and whether or not we as christian should promote it, listen to it, or if we should totally not be in-tune as most of us are with it... i'm just curious what everyone on here has to say about that... is it "satan's music"?
I honestly think that if God can make rock come to life, he can take anything in it's form and change it for His glory, obviously you are all living proof. Many believe that because Jay-z to The Roots to Eminem, etc. do not edify our spirits that we should not take part in wanting to collaborate with these artists or buy their cd's... replies are wanted... hehe God Bless, 5thgenration

I'm not really religion, spiritual moreso.

But I've been hearing of more and more people giving up rap b/c it's "evil". Not even accepting christian rap or positive rap. I even heard of a church's pastor having all of it's youth members bring in their hip hop CDs and burning them.

My thing is, if you give up hip hop, you also have to give up RnB, televisions, and movies. You can't just single out hip hop as the ONLY bad influence if your going to do away with all things secular.

I can understand not supporting hip hop artists that promote violence and negative things, but giving up ALL of a genre of music is jusy insane to me.

yea man, that's crazy.. i mean i threw out a lot of my non-christian hip-hop cd's cuz they just changed the way i thought... i would get angry a lot quicker and i would speak and sometimes cuss, since i've thrown them out i've been able to have more patience and not speeak foul... i mean it's really all God's doing, but i allowed myself to grow closer to God by getting rid of that influence... i mean i enjoy the east coast stuff, like the more underground rappers, but i mean i don't even listen to anything much more besides jazz, christian based music and latin music... to each his own though, all gifts are from God so, whatever i say... if you can have control then do it i guess, the point is not revolve your life around that, you know we are to work on ourselves as a whole, to be like Christ so some people might have to leave that in order to be more so like Jesus, others are not affected, like anything. some people can't wear fake jewelry, some people can't wear certain perfumes, some are allergic to foods, that's how i think our spirits are... possibly?? not sure... but i mean anyway, that's me. Thanks for the reply.

Good convo. It's been a classic debate for years. I don't have an answer, maybe just some questions. Do we sometimes justify it? Is it more about self control?

i think that many try to justify their personal reasons for listening to it, and i also feel that it is about self control... i mean there are somepeople who can endure more trials and tribulations than others, there are some people who can go without something longer than others..i mean each one has their limits to self control, and i feel as though some try and justify the self control of a specific person for the rest of the crowd... i mean if we were to be very square in our walk with God, then wewould hae to avoid more than just non-christian based music, we would have to avoid any interaction with the world we had that did not allow us to minister to others...which everyone can agree with me when i say that in everyday there are people we meet and places we go to where we do not plant the seed for any given reason.... i mean we attempt to make those opportunities available, but i'm sure that for the most part many of us do not, with work and school and financial and personal issues it is harder for us to spend our days completely spreading the word...life on a daily basis is not the same as it was back then... and i've just gone off into another topic! sorry hehe, but anyway, my thoughts earlier on your questions..

I go with what the apostle Paul said in the Bible>

All things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.

I listen to rap sometimes, and I enjoy it. When I feel it is affecting me in a negative way... I stop listening to it. When I think I can listen to some more, then I do. At all times, I ask myself, is it helpful. Sometimes it is.

As some of you may know, I am a full-time missionary. I spend up 12 hours on the streets each day sometimes and get quite tired. Sometimes I like to just chill out and do something trivial. Sometimes I'll listen to a rap CD. Some lyrics are easier to handle than others. But I am not afraid of anything. If something is blatantly satanic, I just say, "that's crap", and then stop listening to it.

Actually some of my best lyrics have come in response to hearing "crap" lyrics. So, as long as it's helping me do MORE for God (even if it's just out of reaction) then I am all for it.

One thing, though... I wouldn't buy a secular CD. For one thing, I hardly buy anything, as I try to minimise my possessions for several reasons. The price of a CD can often be put to much better use than paying someone who works for the dark side. So, I just go to music stores and listen to stuff there for free (or to soundclick, etc.). There is also the radio.

I think the real danger comes if we start to "preach" or practise the same things that secular rap does. But until we offer something better than what these secular/satanic guys do, people will have no choice.

As for some people choosing to go off rap altogether as a reaction, I can say that I know a lot of people like that. However, every time I have offered them some of my own rap stuff, they have been quite happy to hear it, and have given very positive feedback. I know some people who actually now like positive hip hop as a result.

So let's keep planting those seeds of truth and love. If God be for us, who can be against us? Amen?
