You guys may not know who I am but Ive been around christian hip hop since it started. And Ive seen it change from people only preaching in their rhymes to it expanding into its own sub categories etc. The problem comes in when you are defined by your music. Hip hop is a lifestyle but some "christian" mc's take this WAYYYYY to seriously. They try too hard to be real (whatever real is) See they for get that God has given them a talent for TWO reasons...1. to glorify HIM and 2. to evangelize. Once those two things are forgottwen then it becomes an art driven creation instead of a "heart" driven creation of music. I Know most of the guys in LA symphony. I went to college with Flynn and hung out with pigeon john ALLLOOTT. So I know they are good brothers in the lord but I agree that they lack the message sometimes. We are called to be set apart. Jesus called us to be separate from the world. We are not supposed to blend in. Sure we have similarities when it comes to actually rapping and producing ...the culture. But thats where it should end. Ive been to "christian" conferences where all these "christian" MC's walk around with ice grills on their face. Im like ???? We aint got anything to have angst about. Now there is definitely a place to include the hardships and frustrating things of life in our rhymes.......but we are here to present solutions and point heads to christ. Thats why its called "christian hip hop" Otherwise...whats the point? Go get a record deal and just be a "positive" rapper. Personally I know we are called to higher then that. Someone said something like we have to have some darkness in order to relate to listners......thats strange because Jesus said we are to be light in a darkplace....not be darkness right along side of the darkness already present. We should see the darkness and expose it.

I agree with the above post.

I would also add that those of us who call ourselves Christians should be just that.

We are not rappers. We are Christians, but we happen to use rap for part of our ministry. If you find yourself wearing baggy pants, bandanas and gold medallions all the time, I think you've lost something. We should be all things to all people.

Can you relate to people who listen to classical music? Can you relate to people who listen to rock?
what about pop, industrial, and techno?

We are who we choose. And we should choose to be free from having to be anything but ourselves.
